Avalanche Strikes In Chitral District: 14 Died In Pakistan


Last night several houses were destroyed due to heavy snowfall that hits northern region of Pakistan. The avalanche hits the village of sher shal which is under Garam chashma  tehsil and destroyed more than 20 houses. Around 14 people were killed in this avalanche they all were under the rescued from five house that were buried  due to this snowfall in chitral district of Pakistan.

Pakistan’s North scenic region is very common area for avalanches as country’s major glacier also located in this region. Chitral where this incident happened is a part of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province which is located in the northern region of province which is on  the border of Afghanistan.

Scout commandant of chitral district Col Nizamuddin Shah said that 14 dead bodies  have been taken out buried under the building rubble in which six women, six children and two men  were killed. It is still  unclear how many people have been affected by this avalanche but as per the report 14 peoples were declared dead while seven are seriously injured and rescued safely and they were moved to near civil hospital. The administration of chitral district told Pakistan’s Radio that the rescue operation is still is in process to help people that get trapped under the rubble .

Pakistan’s prime minister Nawaz Sharif expressed great grief for the lost of these precious lives in this unalrmed nature’s disastrous incident. He ordered all relevant and provincial authorities to immediately reach at the affected site and undertake all the rescue operation carefully and all take relief work as well.

He also directed National Disaster Management Authority to coordinate with countries provincial authorities in the rescue operation and provide necessary medical facilities, medical care, proper food and shelters to all the affected persons. National Disaster Management Authority  has activated the National Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate for rescue and relief efforts in the  snowfall hit area. National Disaster Management Authority is coordinating with the helicopter provision for operation and asked national highway authorities to fully mobilize its machines for clearing road in all major sectors.

North region of Pakistan is always at high risk because it avalanche prone area. These glaciers are the main source of water in Pakistan for agriculture, domestic and industrial sectors as well. Chitral district Nazim Maghfirat shah said due to heavy snowfall in this area from past two days several families shifted already  their residences to safer locations. And some families had remained in this locality and affected by the snowfall last night.

Due to heavy snowfall main roads are totally blocked and causing problem in transporting injured people to near medical centres and hospitals due to this blockage injured persons are not taken out to get medical facilities from district headquarter hospital. A rescue operation in chaghi area continued overnight and  ISPR said , FC and PDMA worked overnight and successfully rescued 108 travelers and all of them shifted to Noshki.

Chief of army staff Gen Qamaj Bajwa directed its army to provide full support to National Disaster Management Authority, PDMA and local administration for effective and timely rescue and relief operation for affectees.
