In recent days the craze for MBA courses has increased with a boom and so the number of aspirants for IIMs has increased equally. It’s a big thing to get enrolled in any IIM and so many IIM’s are opened in the country. One such institutions is Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management, Shillong. Like all the IIM’s this institution has got great reputation and another thing that is special in it is it’s name which includes the name Rajiv Gandhi.
Recently, a bill was tabled in the Parliament to give autonomy to India’s premier B-schools, IIM’s, has flashed a controversy because of the political overtones. As per the proposal in the bill it is mentioned that ‘Rajiv Gandhi’ tag should be removed from the name of IIM-Shillong, and this lead the opposition to question why.
The proposal came into lime light on the time of the Union Budget coming up with the proposal of dropping the former PM’s name from four schemes of central government such as Rajiv Gandhi Panchayat Sashaktikaran Abhiyan, Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship for Students with Disabilities, Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan. All these above mentioned schemes were announced under the Congress-led UPA.
According to a statement of Congress MP Adhir Chowdhury “the move is a de-Congressisation” proposal of the Modi government. He added “This is a typical expression of the fascist forces. The foremost step is to demolish tradition, and remove history and diversity. The next step is to build a personality cult, all in the name of Narendra Modi,”.
As per the IIM bill, 2017, proposal of changing the name of IIM-Calcutta to IIM-Kolkata is also been introduced. Experts fear the move would not only erode the brand value of IIM-C, but also create confusion amongst people since IIM-Kozhikode is also known as IIM-K.
