The biggest ever joint military exercises between United States and Australia begans today, the show force which is largely at sea area aimed at sending a message to both allies and potential foes including China.
This is the biggest ever exercises involve 33000 Australian and U.S troops on battleships board which is equipped with strike jets that comes as tension over China’s more assertive activity, especially in the disputed South China Sea and has raised fears of confrontation.
The Head of the U.S. Pacific, Admiral Harry Harris, asked how he thought China would view the exercises, and the deployment size was intended as a signal.
Harris told reporters on board the USS Bonhomme Richard,” I am pleased about that message it sends our friends, partners and potential adversaries.”
In recent months, the Relations between the United States and China have soured as the United States seeks to counter what it perceives as Chinese assertiveness in the Pacific that is encapsulated by Beijing’s artificial island building in the South China Sea.
China claims at the resource rich South China Sea, through which every year about $5 trillion in ship borne trade passes. Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines Taiwan and Vietnam have claims on the waterway.
Over the past three years, the United States estimates that China has added more than 3200 acres of land on tiny isles amd seven reefs in the South China Sea installing various ports, runways, communications equipment and aircraft hangars.
The professor of politics and foreign policy at the University of Sydney, James Curran, said,” the illustrated exercise close military ties between the Australia and United States, but it could raise tension amoung.
Curran said,” if there are someconcerns about China’s activities in the South China this military exercise will send signal and take on greater significance.”
“When Australia, the United States and others trying to gang up on China, it will be concerned and looks like containment.”
This exercise will continue for a month in Australian territorial waters and will include training in land and air operations.
