India’s third biggest telecom operator, Idea Cellular, is all set to compete with its rival Reliance JioPhone by launching its new smart phone quite soon. The idea is expected to launch its phone at the range of Rs 2,500. The managing director of the Idea Cellular, Himanshu Kapania, said to the PTI that “The practical solution that we are working on is to work with the handset industry and work with them to be able to bring down the cost of handsets by bringing down the bill of material so that the gap of the announced price of the Jio feature phone versus a smartphone can be brought down to reasonable levels”.
Kapania also added that the appropriate pricing of the upcoming smartphone is still to be finalized, yet it may be valued around Rs 2,500. As after the launch of Reliance JioPhone, the worries about net neutrality are once again on the important stage. On the other hand, Kapania said that the JioPhone won’t allow many of the applications available in the market and it will compel the customers to utilize individual operator’s apps. He also said that the upcoming smartphone from Idea won’t just give choice to pick the operator of his/her choice, however, will also be accessible to download applications like Google, Whatsapp or Facebook. Airtel, in the interim, is likewise reported to partner with other handset manufacturers to give reasonable 4G-enabled feature phone.
Unlike JioPhone, on the other hand, Airtel won’t ‘finance’ the cost of the handset, rather it will package it diverse plans. The Chief Executive and Managing Director of Airtel, Gopal Vittal, said in a statement that “We have no intention to get into subsidizing devices and running the inventory as if we own them. There is a difference between subsidizing and bundling. We have done that on the smartphone side for many years. We will continue to look at bundling”. The game-changer Reliance Jio, however, once again made some immense waves in the telecom and handset industries with the launch of its newest 4G-enabled feature phone known as JioPhone. Interestingly, The Mobile Indian earlier reported that the company is planning to acquire a shipment of 50 million (five crores) devices in India.
Some well-known sources about the whole development on the same have said to The Mobile Indian that “Reliance Jio is going to bring in five crores JioPhones to India which it plans to sell in three months. The first few batches of the shipment have already arrived in India and at present are being dispatched to stores”. In spite of the fact that there is not much clearer about what new offer of Plan B will be we are of the view that refundable security deposit of Rs 1,500 crore might be diminished or the lock in period, three years, to assert the refund might be lessened radically.
