According to the current report, The blast, which struck the Jawadia mosque, coincided with evening prayers at around 20:00 local time (15:30 GMT).The attack took place in the middle of evening prayers when the mosque was packed with about 300 worshipers.

At Herat Main Hospital, Dr Shehrzai confirmed that 29 bodies were brought to the medical facility soon after the blast, more than 60 people injured in a critical condition and the number of deaths can be increased.

Officials said there were at least two attackers – one a suicide bomber, and another who shot at worshipers with a firearm. And both the attackers are dead, a police spokesperson told AFP news agency.

Reuters reported grenades were thrown, citing local police, even the governor’s representative said the suicide attacker also opened fire inside the mosque before detonating his explosives.

It is assumed that the state broadcaster in neighbouring Iran, IRIB, said that seven gunmen were involved, but the things has yet to be confirmed, No group has said it was behind attack, which occurred in a predominantly Shia Muslim area.

Jalani Farhad, the provincial governor’s spokesman said that the Shia Muslims, local residents attacked the police station pelting it with stones and setting it on fire. They were apparently angry at the late response of the police. Shia Muslims are a persecuted minority in Afghanistan and have been threatened by the affiliate of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group that operates in the country’s east.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi has denied responsibility for the deadly attack.

The explosion took place at the mosque just after an ISIL-claimed attack on the Iraqi embassy in Kabul killed two people. Afghanistan’s national unity government said it strongly condemned the Herat attack, describing it in a statement as an “anti-Islam act”.

It also called “on the Muslim people of Afghanistan, as well as on the religious scholars, to stand united against the barbaric actions of the terrorists”. President Ashraf Ghani said that “terrorists cannot create sectarian divisions among our people,” Herat, close to the border with Iran, is considered one of Afghanistan’s more peaceful cities.

The attack there comes one day after a battle at the Iraqi embassy in the capital, Kabul, which also saw gunmen launch an assault following a suicide explosion. So-called Islamic State (IS) said it had carried out that attack. Some areas are repeatedly attacked in the past year, which is dominated by Shia Muslims in Afghanistan, by both IS and the Taliban. From the last five years as attacks increased even the casualties have been civilians, with injury numbers rising.

The deadliest militant attack in the country since US-led forces ousted the Taliban from power in 2001 in which more than 150 people were dead. It is not clear what the intended target was.
