2015 : In this year France made the announcement that it will attract more Indian students to its acclaimed institutes. Two years down the line, it seems all set to surpass its target of drawing 10,000 Indian students by 2020. The figure has already touched 7,000.

The French government told that more than 4,000 Indian students are already studying in France, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the largest country in the European Union in 2015,  We want these numbers to grow further. Our aim is to welcome 10,000 students to France by 2020. This is 50 times more than that of 20 years ago. But it’s still insufficient in terms of the quality of the relationship between the two countries.

To fulfil its commitment, the government has taken two major steps:

  • Firstly, the work visa granted for those who finish their education there, was made valid for two years instead of one. In addition, there are chances to extend it even further.
  • Secondly, the numbers of scholarships available have also gone up. This is very much clear from the fact that in the year 2016, 120 Indian students got Charpak Master’s Scholarship, while 370 secured other scholarships.

Students from India and the world over can study in France in English- or French-medium institutions. Many students who feel their first study destination should be the English-speaking countries such as the US and UK should know that language is not a barrier. If they study in French, then like any other French citizen in French state universities, students benefit from free tuition. They only have to pay for food, boarding and lodging, which are affordable.
