The Former world rank one Maria Sharapova entered into the last 16 at the US open on Friday by conquering US teen Sofia Kenin whereas a wide-open side of the men’s draw lost 2014 champion Marin Cilic. The 2006 US Open winner in her first Grand Slam, Maria Sharapova, returned after experiencing a 15-month doping ban, and overpowered the 139th-ranked wild card and forwarded into a fourth-round clash with Latvian 16th seed Anastasija Sevastova.

The 30-year-old Russian, who’s a five-time Grand Slam Champion, was tested positive for the blood booster meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open, achieved the round of 16 for the 14th time in 15 Slams since the 2011 US Open. Completed the ban in April, Maria Sharapova, was ignored for a wildcard in the French Open and wounded for Wimbledon but was provided a US Open wild card in spite of playing only one hard court tune-up match for the reason to a forearm injury. The former world rank one player broke Kenin with a forehand winner following a 66 minutes steal the first set, shared early second-set breaks on double faults then broke again in the sixth and final games for the victory.

“We had never faced each other and she came out having nothing to lose and it’s always dangerous so I’m happy I went through,” the 30-year-old Russian said.
