North Korea is not your regular totalitarian dictatorship. However, it has an human rights record for corruption and poverty and now there is no political or economic freedom to speak of.
But, yet a couple of chilling characteristics set it apart, an unpredictable young leader and a nuclear weapons programme. Kim Jong Un military is capable of an effective nuclear strike is open to question.
In defiance of United Nations resolutions, the Asian country’s aggressive rhetoric and regular missile tests are vexing the international community and pressuring China, North Korea to rein in its errant neighbour.
The US President Donald Trump threatened to deal with Kim’s regime strongly and saying the options including the military ones are on the table. In August, the Tensions escalated as the UN Security Council approved tougher sanctions against North Korea and a response to its quickening pace of nuclear missile tests.
The Asian country said,” It would make the US pay dearly for the sanctions, Trump to threaten to unleash fire and fury.” Kim responded by threatening fire missiles into waters near Guam where the US has military bases and by testing a ballistic missile over Japan. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe described that test as an unprecedented serious threat.
Then, in September, North Korea claimed to have successfully carried out its sixth nuclear test, detonating a hydrogen bomb that can be fitted onto an intercontinental ballistic missile.
In July, North Korea military base twice test fired the long range ICBM, afterward the entire US was now in range. The military analysts have upgraded their assessment of nuclear capability with one study that concluded that the country has successfully produced a nuclear warhead that can fit inside its missiles.
This year the Trump raise the and heat then in april after talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to find diplomatic solutions with Beijing.
He warned and said the major conflict should fail and repeatedly criticized China for failing to do enough. The China suspended the critical coal purchases from its neighbour in February while pushing the talks to resume.
Last year, North Korea carried out its fourth and fifth nuclear tests and pushed the UN to tighten the sanctions. After the objections from China the US deployed a defence system in South Korea designed to take out North Korean missiles which is aimed at South Korea.
However the North Korea has a record of escalating and lowering the tensions to win diplomatic and economic benefits. In 1990s, it removed the spent of fuel rods from its nuclear reactor before the former US President Jimmy Carter brokered a deal to its program in exchange for help in a civilian nuclear energy program.
In 2006 the North Korea first tested its first nuclear missile, multinational disarmament talks and another agreement to close the nuclear facilities. But, this time in exchange for food and energy assistance north Korea has exited the talks and started its nuclear program again.
Since, its creation in 1948 the country has been on a war footing of Japanese occupation. Its founder Kim Il Sung, who was the grandfather of the Kim Jong Un , invaded South Korea to start the Korean War. In his early 30s the Western educated Kim Jong Un has carried out the majority of his nuclear tests while railing America’s reckless moves toward the war.
North Korea was thought to have 6 to 20 nuclear warheads that describes its weapons as a precious sword of justice against invaders and points out the demise of Iraq and Libya, after they gave up on nuclear arms. Out of 1.3 million North Korean citizens 25 million people are in the active military with 7.6 million reservists.
However, the Weapons are not the only concern as the UN inquiry accused the regime of human rights and abuses on a scale in the contemporary world.
Neither the carrot approach nor the military exercise and international sanctions has produced more than a temporary halt to N Korea’s nuclear program. According to critics, The China-North Korea is the biggest trade partner and supplier of most of its food and energy and could do more to make sanctions effective.
China fears a collapse of the Pyongyang government and might prompt an influx of millions of refugees in the event of South Korea absorbing when its neighbour create a well armed US ally on its border.
Some other options include tightening of economic sanctions and the awaiting downfall of the Kim dynasty, through Kim Jong Un’s ill health or political infighting.
Kim executed the senior advisers and his uncle and one time guardian while raising the concerns about his temperament and the absence of considered counsel.
The analysts warn that the North Korea with nuclear weapons would be more dangerous than a stable North Korea with nuclear arms. A 2015 survey on South Korean attitudes toward reunification by the Asian Institute for Policy Studies says,” North Korea has a serious image problem in South Korea.”
