To provide equitable access: After IITs, NITs to allocate Special Seats for Women from next Academic session


From now onwards girls will be getting more chance to get admitted in top engineering colleges in the country, As the percentage of girls will be increased from the next academic year on 2018-19.

The move or decision is taken by the government is to provide the equitable access to the girls, as the number of girls has been decreased in comparison to the last year, so decisions have been made to provide special supernumerary seats for female candidates by the 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST).

A senior Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry official, while exchange his words on the current matter said that the seats for male students will not be reduced, and the seats will be created for the girls only if the percentage of girl students falls below 14% in any NIT, otherwise no reservation will be made by them, and this percentage will gradually increase to 17% in 2019 and 20% in 2020.

This year, of 17,061 total students, 2,440 female students took admission in the engineering colleges.

The number of female students has been decreased in comparison to the last year, as last year the number of girls was 22%. This year only 14% female candidates took admission in the 31 NITs, as per the current sources. During this year admissions, 2017, (14) NITs out of the (31) including the well-established ones at Suratkal, Allahabad and Patna saw the percentage of girl student admissions rapid decrease to 14%.

Even in IITs, 4% of seats will be reserved for women candidates which means a total of 1,540 girls are likely to take admission compared to 1,100 this year. There will be an increase of 440 seats for women candidates from next year.

The IIT council approved a hike in the number of seats allotted to women. As per the orders “To improve girls’ enrolment in NITs and IIEST, Shibpur a study has already been conducted by the IITs and the recommendations have also been accepted by the Council of IITs… it has been decided to adopt the following course of action,” According to the order, the statutory reservation:

  • Scheduled Castes (SCs)
  • Scheduled Tribes (STs)
  • Other Backward Classes (OBCs)
  • Physically Handicapped (PH)

For the above categories will be same and the only change will be in the reservation of girls, as with the latest move, at least another 300 girl students are expected to get a seat.
