On Wednesday, Mary Kom won her 5th Asian Boxing Championship gold medal in the Light Flyweight category by beating Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi in the summit clash at Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. The five-time world champion and Olympic bronze-medalist won in the final bout 5-0 by unanimous judges decision. It was the first time in last five years that Mary Kom came back to her favorite 48-kg category and came out a champion as she has been away from boxing ring for a long time.
Talking about the semifinal on Tuesday, Mary Kom had started the day on a good note for India as she defeated Japan’s Tsubasa Komura also in a unanimous 5-0 verdict to enter the final for the fifth time in her total six appearances at the event. Mary Kom had expressed her wish to return to India with a gold medal ahead of the clash. Mary had told Times of India (TOI that “I always knew that if I could remain fit, a gold medal was always within my grasp. I have managed to maintain my fitness over the course of this tournament and I am feeling very confident of a good show in the final as well”.
