Stage set for Rahul Gandhi, Congress may hold party president election on December 16

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) announced today that election for the post of Congress president will be held on December 16 and the counting of votes scheduled for December 19. Prior to this, the news agency ANI mistakenly reported that the CWC passed a resolution to make Rahul Gandhi party president.

The Congress party said that notification for the post of Congress president will be issued on December 1, whereas nominations will have to be filed on December 4. The Congress will declare its candidate on the last day of scrutiny if there would be no candidate against Rahul Gandhi, which is December 5. It is expected that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is to be the only candidate in the one-sided battle. Following a vital meeting of the Congress Working Committee chaired by party president Sonia Gandhi at her residence in the Capital, the announcements were made on the dates of Congress presidential election. It is expected that the party’s organizational election should be completed before December 31.
