Bollywood’s ultimate Charmer fades into Stars: Shashi Kapoor R.I.P.


Shashi Kapoor passed away in Mumbai today at an age of 79 after a prolonged illness, will always be remembered for his many commercial films, his commitment to quality cinema. He had good looks, rakish smile and was the most charming actor of his time whether at 25 when he was dancing around trees or at 65 when age and the weight had slowed him down. He used to be teen, ladies crush. Director Shyam Benegal quoted saying a statement to PTI for the late actor “He was god’s good man. He was such a beautiful human being beyond anything else”.

He was born on March 18, 1938 in Calcutta to Rama Devi and Prithviraj Kapoor the son of a legendary actor. His career in cinema started in 1961 with Yash Chopra’s Dharmputra followed by Kabhi Kabhie, Fakira,Ghar Ek Mandir,Householder, Shakespearewallah and Heat and Dust.

The biggest turnaround came in 1980 in his life when he started his own company Film Vala, where he invested his money in making films with the likes of Benegal and Aparna Sen. Their partnership resulted in best pictures of that time like 36 Chowringhee Lane, which saw his wife veteran theater actor Jennifer Kendal, as an aging teacher in a changing world. He was the star with no starry tantrums, the man who was loyal to his wife through more than 25 years of marriage. He was very humble and polite to his fans always showed his kindness for his fans and poor. He led a helping hand to the poor people. He stood apart from his peers he was a part of the rat race but never took part in that rat race. His wife passed away in 1984 and he became very much depressed after that and it was as if the very life had begun ebbing away from him too. He started losing weight as time passed and the roles also started dwindling.

Shashi Kapoor soon started eloping from the headlines. He appeared in few films like Noor, Custody and Jinnah some years after that. He also revived his father’s Prithvi Theatre which is now taken over by his daughter Sanjana and she manages the theatre. His both the sons Kunal and Karan Kappor tried their hands in films but soon stood away from the films when they realised it was not their cup of tea. Ill health made Shashi Kapoor condition to deteriorate over time. He was awarded with the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2015 but he was too unwell to travel to New Delhi to receive it. Bollywood’s most charismatic hero has bid adieu to all Bollywood celebrities Aamir Khan,  Karan Johar , Ajay Devgan, Arjun Rampal and Bipasha Basu  paid tributes to Shashi Kapoor who was one of the legend actor of the Indian cinema industry, who passed away on Monday at the age of 79 due to prolonged.
