Congress has double standards on Triple Talaq Bill, says Finance Minister Arun Jaitley

On Wednesday, the BJP senior leader and finance minister Arun Jaitley accused the Congress party of “double standards” on its stand on the triple talaq bill, alleging it was attempting to stall the bill in the Upper House following its getting back in the Lok Sabha. The Union finance minister also added that the government wanted a debate on the bill, which criminalizes instant talaq, and its way with consent like the GST bill, the parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar told media.

Minister Kumar quoted Jaitley as saying, “The Congress is showing double standards. It is trying to stall the bill in Rajya Sabha after supporting it in the Lok Sabha.” In the weekly meeting of BJP MPs, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah were also present. As the saffron party lacks a majority in the Rajya Sabha, it has to be dependent on the Opposition and other non-NDA parties to pass the bill. Kumar added that the government has been talking to the Congress and other parties to pass the triple talaq bill. In Lok Sabha, on the other hand, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill was passed last week.

Kumar further added that a bill, which pictures constitutional status for the OBC Commission, will arise in the Lower House again following the opposition forced amendments in the Rajya Sabha in the last session. The minority affairs minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi talked about the government’s move to eliminate with the need of ‘mehram’ (male guardian) for women, who are 45 years of age or older, going for Haj.
