The police said that three militants were encountered with security forces early on Monday, including one who allegedly killed a policeman in Sri Nagar last month. As per the police statement, two of the killed terrorists have been identified as Eesa Fazli, of Srinagar and Syed Owais Shafi, of south Kashmir’s Kokernag, whereas the identity of the third is yet to be determined.
Established on information about the presence of militants, security forces initiated a search in Hakoora area of Anantnag district. The officials said that a gun-battle caused when the militants fired on the search team. AK 47 rifles, hand grenades, and pistols have been recovered from the encounter place, the police said. The authorities have levied restrictions and ordered that all educational institutes in Srinagar will remain closed for a day to evade any law and order situation in the area. On the other hand, all scheduled exams have been postponed in the state. A senior police officer revealed Fazli was the alleged mastermind behind the killing of police constable Farooq Ahmed Yatoo when he was on duty as a guard outside the residence of separatist leader Fazal Haq Qureshi.
The media reported that Fazli was studying engineering at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah (BGSB) University in Rajouri in Jammu region before joining the militant ranks last year in August. IS claimed in November last year that an attack in Zakura on the peripheries of Srinagar in which a policeman and a militant were killed. Following the IS’ claim in November, Rajya Sabha was told in January that “nothing has been established on the ground that the ISIS is operating in any part of Kashmir valley”.
