Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat to release pan-India as SC lifts by six states

On Thursday, the Supreme Court stayed the ban of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat in six states. The top court also said that states must ensure law and order are maintained and they cannot ban the movie mentioning it as a problem. Every state is constitutionally grateful to maintain law and order and prevent any problematic incident during the screening of the film all over the country, the bench hearing the matter perceived.

The CJI Misra said during the hearing that “If we go by this (arguments leveled against films), 60 per cent of literature, even classical literature of India cannot be read”. Debating for the states, Additional Solictor General Tushar Mehta told the bench that history could be distorted to the extent that Mahatma Gandhi can be displayed as “sipping whiskey”. ASG Mehta added that “That’s distortion of history. Country will never allow that”. “That is not even distortion of history,” replied senior advocate Harish Salve, who was appearing on the behalf of producers. The film producers filed a petition on Tuesday before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, following a day Haryana joined the list of states to ban the film.

Later, the producers moved to the apex court through senior lawyer Harish Salve and advocate Mahesh Agarwal and submitted that the movie has endured changes, including in its title, as suggested by the Central Board of Certification (CBFC). The bench approved to hear the issue today following the petitioners asked for an immediate hearing of the matter. The governments of Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, all BJP-ruled states, had announced that they will not allow the screening of the movie, which is set for release on January 25. Following making some recommendations including a change in the film’s title, the CBFC had cleared the film for release with U/A certificate.

Padmaavat producers moved Supreme Court against ban of its release in four states

Following the ban in four states, the producers of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat have knocked the doors of Supreme Court after receiving clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for a normal release in every state. The governments of Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana have banned the film saying its release may present law and order situation.

A Bench, comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud, measured the proposal of the counsel of the producer that the matter be heard instantaneously because of the ban by Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana mentioning law and order issues. The Bhansali’s film is based on Mohammad Jayasi’s poem Padmavat, starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in the lead roles. The film director Sanjay Leela Bhansali witnessed protests across India for allegedly distorting history, a charge that the makers of the film denied strongly.

The film was initially titled as ‘Padmavati’, which was later changed to Padmaavat as suggested by the CBFC. Padmaavat was cleared by the CBFC for release with U/A certificate and a set of five modifications. The film has been experiencing violent protests by the fringe group, Shri Rajput Karni Sena who guilt the ace filmmaker and lead actors of insulting Rajputs and the community’s honor. The protestors, on the other hand, also issued death threats against Bhansali and Deepika over allegations that the queen has a dream sequence with Muslim emperor Alauddin Khilji in the movie, which was clearly denied by the filmmakers.

The makers of Padmaavat released a new poster on Monday with no faces, noting the changes in bold and comforting everyone that the film “upholds the honor of the Rajput community”. The Bhansali’s film is all set to release on January 25, set for a box office clash with Akshay Kumar’s PadMan.

Commenting on her journey in Bigg Boss 11, Shilpa Shinde also talked to IANS. “See, in the last 15 years, people did not love me, but the characters that I played. Echoing about her future plans, Shilpa had said following the reality show finale, “I would rather explore the medium of films than television. I won’t go anywhere without making a film with Shahrukh Khan, says Anurag Kashyap

Shahrukh Khan and Anurag Kashyap may belong to North and South pole in terms of different cinematic approaches but the filmmaker pledges not to leave Bollywood until he works once with the superstar. The filmmaker talked about the fact that several times he came close to working with Shahrukh Khan, who was also his Delhi University senior. He said in a group interview that the 52-year-old actor was excited to work with him in ‘No Smoking, which later went to John Abraham.

“He wanted to do No Smoking and he was very upset when I went away from him. I also went to him with Allwyn Kalicharan. I wanted to do that with him and a big superstar from Hollywood. Everything was almost done but then again (it didn’t happen). But we will work together. I won’t go anywhere without making a film with Shah Rukh Khan… I will write a film that will lure him. He should be attracted to it, he should be dying do the film,” Kashyap said. The director said he is in awe of the 52-year-old actor with whom he describes his relationship “strange”.

“He is my senior from university. He has been there like a big brother helping me. He is super successful. When he loves you, he approaches things like, in my struggling years, (he used to tell me), ‘If you do what I tell to do, your problems will disappear’. But I didn’t want him to make my life,” said the filmmaker. The 45-year-old filmmaker added that he can fight with anyone but not with the superstar. “He is the only guy I can never speak upto. I can fight with the world but not him. If he scolds me, I’ll sit in a corner and cry. He is someone I have this love for. I love him to death,” Kashyap said.

Kashyap revealed that SRK often pokes fun at him, bullies him but he is charming as well. He was speaking at ‘India and the World – The Changing Narrative’ film festival conceptualized by writer Anuraadha Tewari, held at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya. “Film festivals showed me a way how to make low budget films. In the sense, while I’m making a film which doesn’t have a lot of pedigreed star cast, the interest in the project is created by film festivals. If my films work there, it’ll help me create awareness here,” the filmmaker said adding that movie fests “saved” him.

Kaalakaandi Movie Review: Saif Ali Khan is the only reason to watch this film

Kaalakaandi rating: 2.5/5 Stars

Star Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Akshay Oberoi, Isha Talwar, Sobhita Dhulipala, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Deepak Dobriyal, Vijay Raaz, Shivam Patil, Amanda Rosario, Shenaz Treasurywala

Director: Akshat Verma

What’s Good: Saif Ali Khan’s weirdly smart performance, some pretty drug trip moments

What’s Bad: The story without its purpose. Pace could be another flaw for some as well.

Loo Break: Except some great moments, you can go for loo break anytime.

Watch or not?: If you’re free this weekend and have nothing special to do, you can go for this film.

Kaalaakandi Movie Review: Star Performance

Saif Ali Khan is the best thing happened to this film. His intoxicated act in the film is something to watch out. Khan, to a certain level, is the only savior to the film. We can’t imagine this film without Saif as it would’ve been a disaster only by then. He has performed really well in the film but the actor needs to pick up his future projects wisely as such films are not going to take him anywhere.

Deepak Dobriyal and Vijay Raaz have done a great job when they’re not unreasonably abusing in the film. There are many other actors in the film but due to lack of story path, Kaalaakandi just puts everything down. The story is ruthlessly senseless.

Kaalakandi Movie Review: Direction, Music

Akshat Verma could be a good director but the story sank everything. Story is the basic need for any film and it destroyed the good direction of the film as well. The director fails to clarify what the story really wants to portray.

Songs by Sameer Uddin and Shashwat Sachdev find no appropriate place in the film. All songs are fine to fill the empty place in the film but nothing else. However, the background music is really impressive, quirky and makes the tone for some amazing scenes.

Kaalakandi Movie Review: The Last Word

Kaalakandi is just bearable because of Saif Ali Khan and his quirky performance. But there’s nothing else that could save this film due to the pathless story of the film.
