In the world of health and nutrition, there are many myths around eggs that you probably believe in or have grown up listening despite of its great reputation. Here’s busting a few of them.

Let’s make you people aware of some of the common myths and disclose the fact behind them.

  1. Myth: Eggs increase the blood cholesterol levels

If we start to compare measuring then it the food its impact of a food item on our blood cholesterol levels, saturated and trans-fat (the ‘bad’ fats) levels should be taken into account.

Dr. Anju Sood Bangalore based nutritionist says, “There are parts you can pick and choose from, one of them is the egg, It is the yolk of the egg that raises the lipid profiling , hence maybe you can choose to avoid that and load up on egg whites. Two egg whites a day are adequate protein for the day.”

US Scientists find new Possibility to cure Leukemia

Recently in a study published in the Nature Medicine Journal a group of American scientists from Stanford University and National Institute of Health (NIH) has found a new possibility to cure leukemia which is a deadly disease that can occur to people at a very young age of seven years. These American scientists discovered a molecule called as CD22 that can serve as a potent target for the cells who act as killer cells of leukemia.

Leukemia is a blood cancer which occurs due to blood-forming tissues which results in the hindering of one’s body’s ability to fight with infection. The moment you hear that someone has leukemia we think that it is the end of that person as there were no proper medication and cure earlier for the disease. The olden ways were by doing proper monitoring of food and living habits in case one has mild leukemia, in severe leukemia cases chemotherapy that has to be followed by radiation are considered as treatments for curing the disease that is also known to be blood cancer.

The research and development all started after the US Food and Drug Administration approved a cell-based gene therapy called as CAR T-cell treatment, last year. The therapy works in a way by genetically modifying the immune cells of a patient. This helps to seek leukemia cells which is surrounded by a CD19 molecule on their surface and attacks them in return. 2 of the scientists discovered a molecule named as CD22 which can be treated as a similar target. Scientists have treated 21 patients in the age group of 7 to 30 years with a treatment-resistant B-cell leukemia to test the new CD22-directed method discovered by them recently. The 17 of them had CD19-directed therapy prior to it out of which 15 of them failed to respond and relapsed. It was found that by giving lowest dose to patients 1 out of 6 patients only achieved complete remission post the treatment process and with a very high dose 11 out of 15 patients achieved remission.

The new approach is very helpful as those patients who are treated with CD19-directed therapy, their cancer cells stop expressing the CD19 molecule on the surface of the cells. The researchers are in a good hope that by targeting simultaneously CD19 and CD22 an approach is produced where cancer cells don’t evade with results in the discovery of a new therapy that will cure leukemia in future.

So a disease for which there was no proper medication and curing measures earlier where chemotherapy was only the option scientists have come up with new therapy through which the disease can be cured to a great extent and the thinking that if a person is diagnosed with blood cancer than it’s the end of that person will change as from now on and in future it will be a new beginning of one’s life.

MIND Diet may Lower Risk of Alzheimer’s by 53%

A new study has been done which is published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of The Alzheimer’s Association, it’s name is  the MIND diet—which stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay reduced Alzheimer’s risk by 53% among those who followed the diet strictly and by 35% among those who followed it pretty well and even for those who followed moderate adherence to the MIND die. It showed a statistically significant decreased rate  risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. This kind of study is great to human being so that they can know what is good for them.

According to researchers of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, who developed the diet, researched at more than 900 people who were of between the ages of 58 and 98 and those people filled out food questionnaires and also went through repeated neurological testing. Researchers found that the participants whose diets most closely followed the MIND recommendations they had a level of cognitive function the equivalent of a person 7.5 years younger. Which means that MIND diet works for them.

The MIND diet is helpful to improve brain health because  it helps to protect memory and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. With the increase of our age the risk of developing Alzheimer’s increases. The cause of Alzheimer’s disease is still unknown and undiscovered, researchers are working their level best to find the root cause.

The food items which protect us from getting prone to Alzheimer are :

We should have three servings of whole grains each day, also should have six servings of leafy greens a week, along with one other vegetable daily,Two servings of berries a week,One serving of fish a week,Two servings of poultry a week,Three servings of legumes a week,Five servings of nuts a week.

Vegetables and fruit

The MIND diet suggest to have this diet atleast once in a day, such as broccoli, sweet potato or apples.

Serving size should be Vegetables: 2 cups raw vegetables or 1 cup cooked

Fruits

Serving size: 1 cup fresh fruit or 1/2 cup dried fruit or 1 medium-sized fruit, such as an apple

Servings: 1 per day, at least

Beans

Beans are not only have fibre and protein but they also have vitamin B in a huge amount which are essential for brain function and health.

Beans doesn’t have so much of fat and can go easily with many kind of dishes.

Serving size: 1/2 cup cooked

Servings: at least 4 per week

Seafood

Seafood is a good source of OMEGA 3 and it is also  have  a lower risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

Olive oil

Rich in over 230 anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, olive oil helps remove dangerous proteins from the brain.

Serving size: 1 tablespoon

Servings: Use as your primary oil for low to medium heat, or with cold dishes

Wine

Wine is also recommended in MIND diet because a small amount of wine is good for health.

Wine contains polyphenols, which are micronutrients which help prevent degenerative diseases.

A daily serving of alcohol, preferably wine (red wine is best for its overall health benefits!). Olive oil is also widely accepted when it comes to the MIND diet and is used in most cooking.

But when it comes to limitations, sweets, fried foods, butter or margarine and red meat are to be consumed at a minimum – less than five times a week.

One-fifth of Cancer Patients Experience Post-traumatic Stress disorder

There is a new and important study has been done on cancer patient that they have a possibility of having post-traumatic stress disorder. According to the study One-fifth of patients with cancer experience post-traumatic stress disorder, this study highlights the need for early identification, careful monitoring, and treatment of PTSD in survivors. Although PTSD is well known to develop in a person who suffers from a traumatic event such as any kind of serious accident or natural disaster, it can also occur in patients diagnosed with cancer. The researchers who done the research at the National University of Malaysia analyzed 469 adults with various cancer types within one month of diagnosis.

Patients who were suffering from that disease underwent additional testing after six months and again after four years. Researchers thought that this amount of time for the test is sufficient for the results.

When they evaluate all the results revealed that the PTSD incidence of 21.7 per cent at six months which followed, with rates dropping to 6.1 per cent at four years follow-up.

According to Caryn Mei Hsien Chan from the National University of Malaysia” many cancer patients trust that they need to adopt a fighting mentality’, and stay positive and optimistic from diagnosis through treatment to have a better chance to beat cancer.”

PTSD

Caryn Mei Hsien Chan also said “To these patients, who are seeking help for the emotional issues they face is akin to admitting weakness, there needs to be greater awareness that there is nothing wrong with getting help to manage the emotional upheaval – particularly depression, anxiety, and PTSD – post cancer”.

This type of research will definitely help in future to the cancer patients as doctor will have analysis of the patient so that they do not suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Patient will have a good advantage from this study. These kind of study should be done time to time so that mankind get benefits from that.

Becki McGuinness, a patient who was diagnosed with bone cancer, told that the resulting PTSD and depression were the biggest challenges for her. She also added that suffering from an illness of this kind and then having PTSD is more painful.

When Becki was treated with chemotherapy, her age was 21. When it is discovered that it is not working, she was told she would need radiotherapy. She told her story by the time I’d finished radiotherapy, and a few months passed, my periods were stopping.

“It wasn’t until I was 23 that I found out that I’d gone through the menopause and was infertile

It was very painful for her when she knew that her fertility could be saved. She told that she was devastated – even more so when she found out it could have been prevented.

She told that she was waiting a complete month for her treatment. After that she saw a gynecologist who said, ‘If you’d only been sent to me I could have saved your fertility.'” she left with depression and PTSD, which she still lives with seven years on.

She said that she could take all the physical stuff. She could take even that she might die but when something’s taken away and it’s not your choice, that’s what she find quite stressful.

She told that “If you take that person’s choice away, it’s like saying you’re not worth picking for yourself what you want for your future.” Every patients who suffer from this situation know her pain.

Dr. Chan who was researcher of that research in Malaysia also stressed that many patients lived in fear that their cancer may return.

The fear and depression can cause them to skip appointments as they trigger negative memories, which can be detrimental to their health.

The study also established that patients with breast cancer – who received exceptional dedicated support and counselling at the center studied – were almost four times less likely to develop PTSD in the short term.

It is a very useful study and people will get so many advantages from it because doctors will take care of that from the start and will analyze all the things.

Heavy Drinking and Smoking can make you look Older

According to a new research and a study published online in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health., stop heavy drinking and smoking if you do not want to look older than your true age. This is a long-running study and it began in 1976 and since then it has added and followed by a group of more than 11,500 people in Denmark whose heart health and visible ageing signs were tracked for an average of 11.5 years as part of the Copenhagen City Heart Study. Ages of people range between 21 and 86, with an average age of 51.More than half of the women and two thirds of the men in the study reported that they are currently smokers. The women, on the whole, drank an average of 2.6 drinks each week, while the men drank 11.4 drinks on average in a week. Women that drank 28 or more drinks a week – four times the average number – were 33 percent more likely to develop the aging rings, while women who had 35 or more drinks a week were 35 percent more likely to develop the same trait. The smokers that lit up a pack or more each day for between 15 and 30 years were 41 percent more likely to develop the tell-tale sign of aging.

Bandura's Model

“This is the first prospective study to show that alcohol and smoking are associated with the development of visible age-related signs and thus generally looking older than one’s actual age,” said the researchers. Before each of the clinic visits, Janne Tolstrup from University of Southern Denmark and her colleagues quizzed the participants about their lifestyle and general health and asked to state how much they drank and smoked so that they could be judged on the basis of their lifestyle and health. These people were checked for four signs of ageing which can lead to heightened risk of cardiovascular ill health and/or death.

These were: earlobe creases; a greyish opaque coloured ring or arc around the peripheral cornea of both eyes (arcus corneae); yellow-orange plaques on the eyelids (xanthelasmata); and male pattern baldness (receding hairline or a bald patch on the top of the head).

Analysis of drinking and smoking patterns revealed a consistently heightened risk of looking older than one’s true age and developing arcus corneae, earlobe creases, and yellow-orange plaques on the eyelids among those who smoked and drank heavily. For example, matched with a weekly alcohol intake of up to 7 drinks, a tally of 28 or more was associated with a 33 per cent heightened risk of arcus coneae among the women, and a 35 per cent heightened risk among men who knocked back 35 or more drinks every week. Similarly, compared with not smoking, smoking one pack of 20 cigarettes daily for between 15 and 30 years was associated with a 41 per cent heightened risk among women and a 12 per cent heightened risk among men.

The occurrence of the visible signs of ageing were not so different compared to heavy or moderate smokers but there were drastic differences seen while comparing with nonsmokers. For example – Men and women who drank 28 or more drinks each week and smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for more than 15 years were far more likely to develop four physical signs of aging earlier in life than normal and for light or moderate smokers there were also signs of ageing.

Hence, this is by far the first prospective study to show that alcohol and smoking are associated with the development of visible age-related signs and thus generally looking older than one’s actual age and it should be taken seriously by all the people who smoke and drink.

Successive Governments Have Failed to Contain Pollution

With the National Green Tribunal taking shots at the Central Government for alarming Air Quality Index in the Delhi NCR region, the entire north India grapples with dense smog covering the skies amounting to reduced visibility and possible health issues.

The measures that were taken by the government including the odd-even vehicular movement have failed to bear any fruits. The governments at the Centre as well as the NCT/States have failed to take any measures the environmental concerns of the region which is dealing with overpopulation and lack of proper mechanism to implement various programmes and initiatives of the government.

The AQI in Delhi reaching 448 is just another mayhem, which is grave in various parts of the country, at various levels and attributes to various reasons. The foremost reasons of the upheaval are due to the uncontrolled stubble burning and industrial pollution. These are only a few factors other than the pollution caused by the heavy traffic of not only the vehicles, but the trains and the air traffic which contributes equally to the heavy pollution levels in the capital.

The architects of the modern India have not realised the importance of preserving dense green belts and promoting more greenery in the urban areas and addressing the issue of waste incineration at dumps. The pollution levels are also raised by the particulate matter accumulating in the air by the heavy infrastructural development being carried out in the NCR without paying any heed to the environmental norms in the region.

This author is situated in the city of Lucknow, and unfortunately is also not very great. The AQI is at a staggering 403 figure with no mass mobilisation in the favour of saving the city’s environment. The satellite imagery of the entire north Indian region shows large tracts of land grappling with smog. If this is not alarming to the residents and the governments today, then we may need more push for the health sector addressing various health complexities due to aggravating environmental quality.

The AAP government in Delhi could not offer any solutions before the NGT when asked to come out with immediate measure to rehabilitate the air quality, while the rampant pollution levels across the country don’t seem to have been raising any calls of attention.

The air quality will soon reach all time lows with the air becoming dense due to falling temperatures causing discomfort not only to the humans but also every living being in its vicinity. The horticultural studies have indicated that dense air causes the floral kingdom to consume less of carbon dioxide and the absence of sun affects the photosynthesis capacities of the green beings altogether to yield in more degraded air quality.

The solutions that could not be provided lie round the corner to start with, yet the government that was willing to share the burden of the metro fare hike, cries shortage of funds to even start with eco-friendly and rehabilitation projects!

The private sector in India also does not embrace the enviro-tech businesses to bloom and provide solutions to our problems. This is a clear lack of farsightedness and the will to deal with environmental issues.

The governments and the citizenry must act in haste and deal with the issues that are detrimental to our environment and are not conducive for the survival of future generations, because it is a proverb, “jaan hai toh jahaan hai”, what will we do with state of the art infrastructure and well-paying jobs when our lives will be at risk because of the air we breathe!!

5 Healthy Diet Tips for Dengue Patients

It is very sad to see the deteriorating condition of our country that most of the people are diagnosed with diseases day to day. The first death caused due to dengue was reported recently in New Delhi. A 12-year-old boy Nitish Kumar from Bihar, who was residing in Safdarjung area in south Delhi, died on August 1 due to dengue shock syndrome which resulted in multiple-organ failure at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

According to a Municipal Report at least 657 people have been affected by dengue this season in the capital. At least 153 cases of the disease have been reported this month till 19th August. Out of the 657 cases of dengue, 325 people who were affected were residents of Delhi, while the rest of the people were of different cities.

Symptoms of Dangue

It is recommended and very important to take care of oneself during the monsoon period as the chances of getting prone to diseases are the highest during this period. So dengue is the disease which is caused due to a virus and till now no specific medicines are discovered till now. A good diet, plenty amount of water, proper rest and living in hygienic conditions keeping oneself, surrounding and the environment clean can help one in recovering faster and not even getting prone to dengue. Here I hav mentioned five simple diet tips for dengue patients.

  1. Have Vitamin-C rich foods: Include lots of citrus fruits like oranges and kiwis and even fruits like guava and papaya in your diet. Oranges, kiwis are full of essential nutrients and vitamins. They are rich in vitamin C, which is an important antioxidant. The high-fiber content of oranges makes them good for treating indigestion as well.
  2. Drink Haldi Doodh: The spice turmeric can help in healing one’s body from   within and milk      gives the proteins and carbohydrates your body requires to generate energy.
  3. Drink lots of fluids: One must have plenty of water and coconut water. All these help in flushing out the toxins from the body, boost digestion and provide with necessary vitamins and minerals to recover.
  4. Avoid fried and oily food: Fatty and oily foods take longer to digest and must be avoided during dengue fever.
  5. Green leafy vegetables: Please increase your intake of green and leafy vegetables like spinach and mustard greens as they are full of iron and other nutrients that may help improve the platelet count which decreases during dengue so it is very important to have green vegetables to increase platelets count.

These tips are very useful and must be followed with proper cleanliness of one’s body, surroundings and environment.
