Bhansali’s Padmaavat moves inches closer to its next target of 250 Cr at the box office

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus film ‘Padmaavat’ is roaring at the box office and has no plans to stop soon. It has become Deepika Padukone’s biggest blockbuster of her career, surpassing the collections of Chennai Express. Padmaavat has collected 5.50 crore on Wednesday and with it, the overall collection of it stands at high 231 crores.

It has also crossed the collections of Shahrukh-Deepika’s Chennai Express (227 Cr), which was Deepika’s biggest grosser. For Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, on the other hand, Padmaavat has become the biggest blockbuster of their careers. Interestingly, Padmaavat is the first film in a time with a female protagonist in the title role has scored so massively at the box office. Tiger Zinda Hai, Baahubali 2, Sultan and Bajrangi Bhaijaan are the four 300 crore club films that all have been male-dominated. Bhansali’s Padmaavat is the only film that has an actress in a central role and still achieved the big 200 crore mark at the box office.

There are several records that Padmaavat is going to break in the coming days. We can expect that Bhansali’s historical drama film would already leave behind Salman Khan’s Kick (232 Cr) by today itself and it would be a great achievement for Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. It would be a tough task for both Ranveer and Shahid to achieve such enormous numbers at the box office with their respective next projects.

Padmaavat box office collection: Bhansali’s historical drama crosses 200 crore mark

After facing so many hurdles before the release, Padmaavat is finally roaring at the box office. The film has crossed the major milestone and that too in really rapid time. Bhansali’s magnum opus ‘Padmaavat’ not only joined the 200 crore mark in a moment, but it also has managed to exceed the lifetime total of major biggies like Golmaal Again (205.70 crores), Happy New year (205 crores) and 3 Idiots (202.50 crores).

Strongly continuing at 212.50 crores (following Sunday collections of 20 crores), Padmaavat has crossed Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’s lifetime of 210 crores as well. Talking about the next box office record that this historical drama is expected to break is of Shahrukh Khan’s Chennai Express (227 crores) and it would be easily crossed by the end of the second week. Following Chennai Express, Padmaavat would be in the line to break the record of Salman Khan’s Kick (232 crores). It would also bring the film into Top-10 grossers of all times (ever since the beginning of 100 crore club).

Interestingly, for Deepika Padukone, ‘Padmaavat’ is now her third 200 crores mark film after Chennai Express and Happy New Year. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor, on the other hand, have also found an entry into this top club for the first time ever. This film, mainly, has benefitted to Shahid Kapoor as personal best of 66 crores (R….Rajkumar) has skyrocketed to 200 crores+ with Padmaavat. Bhansali’s Padmaavat is all set to break many records in the coming days.

She probably missed the disclaimers at the beginning, says Deepika Padukone on Swara Bhaskar’s criticism of Padmaavat’s Jauhar scene

Swara Bhaskar’s letter to Sanjay Leela Bhansali is in which she opinionated the Jauhar sequence in Padmaavat as “reduced her just to a vagina”, has led to a furious discourse. However, the film’s lead actress Deepika Padukone has spoken in an interview with Zoom TV and entirely supported the scene in the film on which the whole hullabaloo started.

The 32-year-old actress said that Swara Bhaskar may have skipped the disclaimer that clearly states there is no intent to glorify the practice. “She probably missed the disclaimer at the beginning of the film. You probably went out to buy some popcorn and missed the initial disclaimers that come out. I think, secondly, the fact that it is important to view a film in totality and to see in which period it was set in. Third of all, I think for me this film is not just about the act (Jauhar) that they all committed, but it stood for so much more. For me, it’s a celebration of women and their strength, power, and dignity,” Deepika said while speaking to the TV channel.

The Anarkali of Aarah actor slammed Bhansali for “glorifying Jauhar” in his historical drama and Bhaskar published her open letter online on Sunday. “Women have the right to live, despite being raped, sir. Women have the right to live, despite the death of their husbands, male ‘protectors’, ‘owners’, ‘controllers of their sexuality’.. whatever you understand the men to be. Women have the right to live — independent of whether men are living or not. Women have the right to live. Period. Women are not only walking talking vaginas,” Swara Bhaskar wrote in her letter. The film ‘Padmaavat’ released amid violent protests on January 25 following months of delays, which features Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmini, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji. The film is based on a 13th-century poem by Malik Mohammad Jayasi, Padmavat.

Bisexuality added another layer to Khilji’s complex personality, says Ranveer Singh

The superstar Ranveer Singh, who is receiving miraculous reviews for his latest film Padmaavat, has lastly ended his self-imposed silence on the film and his character, Sultan Alauddin Khilji. While giving one of his interviews with Mid-Day, Singh talked about his role of Alauddin Khilji in Padmaavat.

“I was apprehensive about taking up the role as it was a big risk. Sanjay Sir (Bhansali, director) laid out the cards right at the start and told me that my character is bisexual, so I could make an informed choice. I think the bisexuality added another layer to Khilji’s complex personality; it was a complete dismantling of a traditional moral compass,” Singh said. The actor added that “But, this is a profession where taking big risks defines people. People I look up to —Johnny Depp, Daniel Day-Lewis and Steve Jobs – they are all mavericks and I find myself drawn to their spirit”.

In an earlier interview with HT, Singh talked how he prepared for the role and said that “I did prep [for it] the way I usually do for my other films. I locked myself up for three weeks. I worked on various aspects [of the character] because this is not a character that I can relate to. I don’t have that kind of greed, manipulation or ambition in me. I had to do a lot of study to generate that conviction [in me] that there are people, who think that way. To understand his worldview took a little bit of processing on my part but I created the foundation and then Sanjay sir freestyled with the character. It was a big risk to take up such a character and it’s wonderful to see my gamble pay off. Such validation also gives me the confidence to take bigger risks, challenge stereotypes and push the envelope further”.

Bhansali’s command has helped the 32-year-old actor in several previous collaborations too. “In Bajirao Mastani (2015), he was very hands off but this time, he was very hands-on, so it’s very fulfilling experience now that the film has finally got a release and the kind of things people are saying about my performance and the response that I am getting. God knows that I had my share of struggles while I was doing it but today, I just feel very fulfilled, and above all, happy for Mr. Bhansali because he is the one who had the vision and he fought for it,” the actor added.

The Bhansali’s magnum opus also stars Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, which is making quite a moolah at the box office. Till now, the film has earned Rs 110 crore at the domestic box office. Padmaavat is all set to enjoy a dream run at the box office for another week as Akshay Kumar’s Padman will release by February 9.

Padmaavat box office collection day 4: This Deepika starrer crosses the 100-crore mark

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmaavat finally released on January 25 after much delays it had witnessed. This historical drama has been praised by both critics as well as the general public. From Shahid’s powerful act to Deepika’s honesty as Rani Padmini, the leading actors received a lot of praise for their roles. But Ranveer Singh as intimidating Alauddin Khilji just outshined everyone else. The audiences are going over Singh’s acting as the power-voracious Khilji.

The collections are the reflecting how much the public liked the film as Padmaavat has earned Rs 114 crore at the domestic box office in just four days. Despite the fact that the film had not been screening in few states due to protests, Bhansali’s film is still doing outstandingly well business at the box office. However, it made Rs 24 crore and that’s not bad at all. “Protests… Disturbances… No screening in few states… Yet, #Padmaavat does EXCELLENT biz in its extended weekend… The film lost out on substantial biz [approx ₹ 35 cr / ₹ 37 cr], but the SUPERB trending in other circuits helped put up a MAJESTIC total,” trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.

“Looking at the overall scenario, #Padmaavat has put up FANTASTIC numbers in its extended weekend… Crosses ₹ 100 cr mark… Wed [limited previews] 5 cr, Thu 19 cr, Fri 32 cr, Sat 27 cr, Sun 31 cr. Total: ₹ 114 cr. India biz.,” Adarsh took to Twitter and wrote it. Adding to it, the film is doing some good numbers in the overseas markets as well. Padmaavat has earned Rs 8.88 crore in Australia, Rs 7.59 crore in UK/Ireland, Rs 1.95 crore in New Zealand/Fiji.
