China India Border Tension Remains Despite Growing Economic Ties


The Pentagon said that the tension among India china border will go along the disputed land even after the increase in  economic relationship between the two countries. According to Pentagon, the use of china’s force in territorial disputes throughout its whole history has has varied widely.

In its annual report to congress the Pentagon said, Tensions will  persist along disputed portions of the China  Indian border where both countries patrol with the armed forces.  An Indian patrol, in  September 2016, observed that more than 40 Chinese troops had set up a temporary shelter within Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh and  China claims it as South Tibet.

Both the countries conducted an officer level meetings in which they agreed to maintain peace  and withdrew to mutually acceptable positions. The Pentagon listed out various other border disputes that China has with neighbouring countries, the East China Sea is prominent among them. Due to some disputes led to war as in border conflicts with India in 1962 and Vietnam in 1979, Pentagon said that during the 1960s, a contested border with the former Soviet Union raised the possibility of nuclear war.

In recent some cases which involve land border dispute and sometimes China has been willing to compromise with and even offer concessions to its neighbors. The he Pentagon said, “China has settled 11 land based territorial disputes with six of its neighbors, since 1998. Recently, To deal with several disputes China has adopted a  forceful approach  that continue over maritime features and ownership of potentially rich offshore oil and gas deposit.

The Pentagon said that the tensions remain for India along the  4,057 km border along Arunachal Pradesh that China claims as a part of Tibet and therefore become a part  of China  over the Aksai Chin region , despite growing China-India political and economic relations at the western end of the Tibetan Plateau.

India and china continue to accuse each other and the military build ups along the disputed territories. However, In 2013, India and China officials signed the Border Defence Cooperation Agreement that supplements existing procedures managing the interaction of forces along the Line of Actual Control.

According to Chinese figures, Till september 2016 , the cumulative Chinese investments into India stood at USD 4.75 billion while Indian investments into China were USD 0.689 billion. While Indian  have a presence in China in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, IT and automobiles.

The Pentagon said Japan and China have overlapping claims to both the continental shelves and the East China’s special economic zones that contains oil and  natural gas though hydrocarbon reserves are difficult to estimate. However,  Japan maintains that equidistant line from each country involved should separate the EEZs that China claims as an extended continental shelf beyond the line to Okinawa Trench.

The South China Sea also  plays an important role in security considerations across East Asia because Northeast Asia relies on the flow of oil and commerce through South China Sea shipping lanes which includes more than 80% of the crude oil to Taiwan,  South Korea and Japan. The length of the india Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir is 1,597 km, 200 Km in Himachal Pradesh, 345 Km in Uttarakhand, 220 Km in Sikkim and 1126 km in Arunachal Pradesh.
